04First-aid measures

Eyes
Do not rub. Rinse with much clean water for at least 15 minutes with the eyelids open. Remove contact lenses if this is easy. Get medical advice if the irritation continues.
Skin
Wash with soap and water. Use a skin cream if the skin is dry.
Plaster on the body
If wet plaster is around a hand or another body part, remove it immediately and wash before it becomes hard. If plaster has become hard on the body or the skin is burnt, cool with water and get medical help immediately.
Breathing
Move the person to fresh air. Get medical advice if a cough or irritation continues.
Swallowing
Rinse the mouth and give water to drink. Do not cause vomiting. Get medical advice if a large quantity was swallowed or the person feels unwell.
Note for the doctor
Treat the symptoms.

05Fire-fighting measures

Flammability
The product does not burn and does not feed a fire.
Extinguishing media
Use the media that are correct for the fire around the product.
Special hazards
The packaging can burn. Above about 1450 °C calcium sulphate breaks down into calcium oxide and sulphur oxides.
Advice for fire-fighters
Wear the usual protective clothing and breathing apparatus for a building fire.

06Accidental release measures

Personal precautions
Do not make dust. Wear the protection given in section 8.
Clean-up
Sweep or vacuum the dry powder and put it in a dry container. Do not use compressed air.
Wet material
Let wet plaster set, then remove it as a solid.
Environment
Keep the powder and wet plaster out of drains. Plaster sets under water and can block a drain.

07Handling and storage

Handling
Open and empty the bag with care to keep dust low. Put the powder into the water, not the water onto the powder. Do not eat, drink or smoke during the work. Wash your hands after the work.
Lifting
A bag weighs 20 kg. Lift it with a straight back and bent knees.
Storage
Store in the closed bag, in a dry and covered place, off the floor and away from damp walls.
Shelf life
1 year, in the closed bag, in a dry store, off the floor.
Stack height
Stack the bags on a level and dry base. A guide from Indian site practice for bagged cement (IS 4082): not more than 10 bags high.

08Exposure controls and personal protection

Limits in India
The Second Schedule of the Factories Act 1948 gives no limit for calcium sulphate. It gives limits for dust that contains quartz. Respirable dust: 10 ÷ (% respirable quartz + 2) mg/m³. Total dust: 30 ÷ (% quartz + 3) mg/m³.
Calcium sulphate dust
Literature values, 8-hour average. ACGIH: 10 mg/m³ (inhalable dust). OSHA: 15 mg/m³ (total dust) and 5 mg/m³ (respirable dust).
Quartz, respirable dust
Literature values, 8-hour average. ACGIH: 0.025 mg/m³. OSHA: 0.05 mg/m³.
Ventilation
Work with good ventilation. Use local extraction where the powder is emptied or mixed in a closed room.
Breathing protection
Wear a dust mask (particle filter) when there is dust.
Eye protection
Wear safety goggles when you empty bags, mix, or work above your head.
Hand and skin protection
Wear waterproof gloves for wet plaster. Wear clothing that covers the arms and legs.
Hygiene
Wash the skin after the work. Change clothing that is full of dust.

09Physical and chemical properties

Form
Dry powder.
Colour
White.
Odour
None.
pH (mixed with water)
6.5 (factory lab). Range: 6 to 8.
Bulk density of the powder
780 kg/m³, powder as packed (factory lab). Range: 600 to 800 kg/m³.
Melting point
Not applicable. The material breaks down before it melts.
Flash point
Not applicable. The product is a mineral powder that does not burn.
Flammability and explosion
Not flammable. The dust is not combustible.
Solubility in water
Slightly soluble: about 2 g in one litre at room temperature (literature value for calcium sulphate). The powder reacts with water and sets.
Decomposition
Above about 1450 °C, into calcium oxide and sulphur oxides (literature value for calcium sulphate).

10Stability and reactivity

Stability
Stable when it is kept dry.
Reaction with water
The powder reacts with water, sets hard and gives off heat. This is the intended use. Factory lab test: the mix reaches 50.7 °C while it sets.
Conditions to avoid
Water and damp air during storage.
Incompatible materials
No dangerous reaction is known with common building materials. Published sheets for calcium sulphate tell you to keep it away from strong acids.
Hazardous decomposition products
None in normal use. Above about 1450 °C: calcium oxide and sulphur oxides.

11Toxicological information

Tests on this product
No toxicological test was made on this product. The lines below come from the literature on calcium sulphate.
Acute toxicity
Literature value for calcium sulphate: oral LD50 (rat) more than 2000 mg/kg. This is a low toxicity.
Eyes
Dust can cause irritation by rubbing.
Skin
Literature: calcium sulphate did not irritate the skin in tests and did not cause a skin allergy. Long or repeated contact can dry the skin. Plaster that sets on the skin becomes hot and can burn.
Breathing
Dust can irritate the nose and the throat.
Long-term effects
Literature: no long-term effect of calcium sulphate dust is known. Respirable quartz dust, breathed in for a long time, can cause the lung disease silicosis. IARC puts it in Group 1 (it can cause cancer in humans). Section 3 gives the status of quartz in this product.

12Ecological information

General
Calcium sulphate is a mineral that occurs in nature as gypsum. Calcium and sulphate are natural parts of water and soil.
Persistence and degradability
Not applicable. The material is inorganic.
Ecotoxicity
No test was made on this product. Literature for calcium sulphate: tests with fish, water fleas and water plants showed no toxic effect.
Precaution
Do not put large quantities into drains, rivers or ponds. The plaster sets and it raises the sulphate content of the water.

13Disposal considerations

Product
Let unused wet plaster set. Dispose of set plaster and dry powder as construction waste, in agreement with the local rules.
Do not
Do not put large quantities together with food waste or other waste that rots. In wet conditions without air, gypsum can give hydrogen sulphide gas.
Packaging
Empty the bag fully. Dispose of it or recycle it in agreement with the local rules.
Rules in India
Set plaster and plaster debris: the Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules 2016. An empty bag of plastic: the Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016. The local body can add its own rules.
