Classification
Not classified as hazardous under the United Nations GHS. Published sheets of paper-faced gypsum boards give the same result. The maker states: no hazardous substances.
Label elements
No pictogram, no signal word and no hazard statement.
Dust
Dust from cutting, sawing or sanding can irritate the eyes, the nose and the throat.
Weight and size
One board weighs 15.3 kg and is 1.83 m long. Two persons carry a board. A stack that is not flat can slide or fall.
03Composition and information on ingredients
Type of product
Article: a solid board.
Core: calcium sulphate dihydrate (gypsum)
CaSO4·2H2O. CAS number 10101-41-4. The maker states: 100% natural gypsum.
Face and back paper: cellulose
CAS number 9004-34-6.
Typical composition
Typical for paper-faced gypsum board (published sheets): more than 80% gypsum and less than 10% paper by mass. The rest is starch and small quantities of additives such as foam and dispersing agents. This is not the maker's figure for this board.
Crystalline silica (quartz)
CAS number 14808-60-7. Typical for paper-faced gypsum board (published sheets): natural gypsum can contain a small quantity of quartz. The content of this board is not tested.
Hazardous ingredients
None. The maker states: no hazardous substances.
04First-aid measures
Eyes
Do not rub. Rinse with much clean water for at least 15 minutes with the eyelids open. Get medical advice if the irritation continues.
Skin
Wash with soap and water.
Breathing
Move the person to fresh air. Get medical advice if a cough or irritation continues.
Swallowing
Rinse the mouth and give water to drink. Get medical advice if the person feels unwell.
Injury
For a cut, or an injury from a board that fell, give the usual first aid and get medical help.
05Fire-fighting measures
Flammability
The gypsum core does not burn. The face and back papers can char and burn.
Extinguishing media
Water spray, foam, dry powder or carbon dioxide, as is correct for the fire around the product.
Special hazards
In a fire the paper gives smoke and carbon oxides. Gypsum gives off water vapour when it is heated. Above about 1450 °C calcium sulphate breaks down into calcium oxide and sulphur oxides.
Advice for fire-fighters
Wear the usual protective clothing and breathing apparatus for a building fire.
06Accidental release measures
Broken boards
Collect the pieces by hand. Wear gloves.
Dust
Sweep or vacuum the dust. Do not use compressed air. Wear the protection given in section 8 if there is much dust.
Environment
No special measure. Keep dust and pieces out of drains.
07Handling and storage
Handling
Two persons carry one board, on its long edge. Do not carry a board flat above the head. Wear gloves and safety shoes.
Cutting
Cut the board with a knife (score, then snap) where this is possible. This makes less dust than a saw.
Do not stand on a board
Typical for paper-faced gypsum board (published sheets): a board does not carry the weight of a person between the members of the frame.
Storage
Store the boards flat, in a dry and covered place, on a level floor with supports across the full width. Do not stand the boards on edge.
Stack
A pallet holds 70 to 80 boards. Keep the boards on the pallet as supplied. Put a pallet only on a level floor.
08Exposure controls and personal protection
Limits in India
The Second Schedule of the Factories Act 1948 gives no limit for calcium sulphate or for paper dust. It gives limits for dust that contains quartz. Respirable dust: 10 ÷ (% respirable quartz + 2) mg/m³. Total dust: 30 ÷ (% quartz + 3) mg/m³.
Calcium sulphate dust
Literature values, 8-hour average. ACGIH: 10 mg/m³ (inhalable dust). OSHA: 15 mg/m³ (total dust) and 5 mg/m³ (respirable dust).
Paper dust (cellulose)
Literature values, 8-hour average. ACGIH: 10 mg/m³. OSHA: 15 mg/m³ (total dust) and 5 mg/m³ (respirable dust).
Quartz, respirable dust
Literature values, 8-hour average. ACGIH: 0.025 mg/m³. OSHA: 0.05 mg/m³.
Ventilation
Cut and sand with good ventilation. Use a tool with dust extraction for power sawing or sanding.
Breathing protection
Wear a dust mask (particle filter) for sawing and sanding.
Eye protection
Wear safety goggles for cutting, and for all work above your head.
Hand and foot protection
Wear gloves and safety shoes to carry and to fix the boards.
09Physical and chemical properties
Form
Solid, flat board.
Colour
Face paper ivory. Back paper brown. Core white to grey (typical for gypsum board).
Odour
None.
Size
1220 × 1830 × 12 mm.
Weight
15.3 kg for one board. This is about 6.9 kg for one square metre (worked out from the weight and the size).
Density of the board
About 570 kg/m³ (worked out from the weight and the size of one board).
pH
About 7 (typical for gypsum board, from published sheets).
Flash point
Not applicable. The product is a solid.
Solubility in water
The gypsum core is slightly soluble: about 2 g in one litre at room temperature (literature value for calcium sulphate). The paper is not soluble.
Decomposition
Gypsum gives off water vapour when it is heated. Above about 1450 °C calcium sulphate breaks down into calcium oxide and sulphur oxides (literature value).
10Stability and reactivity
Stability
Stable in dry storage.
Conditions to avoid
Water during storage. Strong heat.
Incompatible materials
No dangerous reaction is known with common building materials. Published sheets for gypsum tell you to keep it away from strong acids.
Hazardous decomposition products
None in normal use. In a fire: see section 5.
11Toxicological information
Tests on this product
No toxicological test of this board is on record. The lines below come from the literature on gypsum and from published sheets of paper-faced gypsum board.
Acute toxicity
Literature value for calcium sulphate dihydrate: oral LD50 (rat) more than 2000 mg/kg. This is a low toxicity.
Eyes
Dust can cause irritation by rubbing.
Skin
Literature: gypsum did not irritate the skin in tests and did not cause a skin allergy. Long contact with dust can dry the skin.
Breathing
Dust can irritate the nose and the throat.
Long-term effects
Literature: no long-term effect of calcium sulphate dust is known. Respirable quartz dust, breathed in for a long time, can cause the lung disease silicosis. IARC puts it in Group 1 (it can cause cancer in humans). Section 3 gives the status of quartz in this product. A board that is fixed and painted gives off no dust.
12Ecological information
General
Gypsum is a natural mineral. Calcium and sulphate are natural parts of water and soil. Paper is made of plant fibre.
Ecotoxicity
No test was made on this product. Literature for calcium sulphate: tests with fish, water fleas and water plants showed no toxic effect.
Recycling
The maker states that the board can be recycled.
Precaution
Keep dust and waste pieces out of drains and water.
13Disposal considerations
Product
Recycle clean off-cuts where a collection exists. If not, dispose of them as construction waste in agreement with the local rules.
Do not
Do not put large quantities together with food waste or other waste that rots. In wet conditions without air, gypsum can give hydrogen sulphide gas. Do not burn waste board.
Packaging
Dispose of or recycle the tape and the pallet material in agreement with the local rules.
Rules in India
Off-cuts and board debris: the Construction and Demolition Waste Management Rules 2016. Plastic packaging: the Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016. The local body can add its own rules.
14Transport information
